While you may not get a new social security number, you can place a fraud alert with the SSA as well as with the credit bureaus.

Credit Bureau Contact Information
Three major credit bureaus provide credit history and information about consumers to potential creditors. If you become a victim of identity theft, you can contact one agency, and it will automatically place a fraud alert with the others. Many people have peace of mind however, by contacting all three to ensure a fraud alert is filed correctly.

Equifax
o    You can mail a request for copies of your credit report to: P.O. Box 740250, Atlanta, GA 30374. The easiest way to get in touch with Equifax to file a fraud alert is by calling 1-800-525-6285. You can also learn how to order a report of your credit report when calling.
Experian
o    To mail requests for your credit report contact: P.O. Box 2104, Allen, TX 75013 or call 1-888-EXPIRIAN. You can even fax your request now to 1-800-301-7196.
Trans Union
o    Mail requests for copies of your report to: P.O. Box 390, Springfield, PA 19064. Call 1-800-888-4212 to place a fraud alert or request additional services from this company
